With the launch of GW2’s long-awaited PvP mode, ArenaNet has been quick to introduce a new feature: win trading. But it seems some players have already mastered the mechanic and are using it as a way to circumvent balance or otherwise manipulate matches so that they can gain an advantage over their opponents.
Guild Wars 2’s PvP community is aflame over win-trading accusations. It all started when one player posted on Reddit that he was trading with another player in order to get ahead of them in the competitive leaderboard.
The Guild Wars 2 PvP community (don’t laugh; there is one, as you know if you’ve read our Fight or Kite column) erupted this week over a wave of allegations of win-trading in PvP, which were popularized by a new video by MightyTeapot. In essence, gamers allege that cheats have been exploiting automated tournaments by employing bots, manipulating lines, and selling or trading victories in order to quickly get to the top of leaderboards. Victory-trading is a catch-all phrase for any kind of match or queue manipulation in which friends (or bots or paid allies) are stacked on rival teams to force a win or defeat. Something’s wrong if you’re attempting to team PvP at 4 a.m. and the opposing team is all hanging around doing nothing instead of trying to win.
“This needs to stop now,” Teapot adds, alluding to the fact that once impressions about the status of fairness in PvP have taken hold, it’s difficult for a studio to change them. “Because the game mode has become a meme.” […] If you don’t take it seriously, you won’t attract additional gamers. And, really, the less players there are, the simpler it is to exploit; it’s a terrible, awful circle.”
The outrage has spread to the forums (though some posts have been removed and preserved) to Reddit, where one user produced a video accusing particular players of cheating as part of an alleged large RTM scam, involving current and past Anet partners.
When we asked ArenaNet for a remark on the issue yesterday, they refused, but if you were wondering if the team was informed, well, now you know. With changes to PvP being one of End of Dragons’ major features, the team just rehired former PvP head Josh Davis to oversee live operations, and the latest WvW test not doing so well, here’s hoping the business addresses the issue sooner rather than later.
