Fallout 4 VR is a first-person shooter video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game is set in an open world post-apocalyptic environment, where the player assumes the role of a survivor who must explore the wasteland to complete quests and build settlements.

The fallout 4 vr reddit is a review of the game Fallout 4 VR. It was released on November 10th, 2017 and has been met with positive reviews.

Fallout 4 VR by Bethesda is a game that grafts the finest aspects of the franchise onto a virtual reality experience. It isn’t flawless, but it is worth playing if you want to see what the future of gaming on this platform holds.

The millennium falcon vr is a virtual reality game set in a post-apocalyptic world. The player has the ability to explore, battle, and even construct towns.

The birds are chirping, your child, Shaun, is safe in his crib, and Codsworth is preparing something in the kitchen. It’s the same opening we’ve seen a million times in the regular Fallout 4, but this time I’m standing in the middle of my virtual reality room, everything not nailed down shoved aside and out of sight.

In this recreated Commonwealth, there will be radiation poisoning (we can’t get enough Fancy Lad Snack Cakes), scavenging (we need whatever we can get for colonies), and a whole lot of suffering. Here’s how we feel about Fallout 4 VR.

In connection to this examination,

We’ve spent enough time in the game to assess the mechanics and playability, so we’re writing this review now. We’ll focus on how the game works in VR and how well it’s been rebuilt for the platform, rather than the main Fallout 4 story and many side quests (no DLC is included), since they haven’t changed.

Virtual reality gaming mechanics in Fallout 4

Pointing sticks

Fallout 4 is a complex game with a lot going on at any one moment, so making it into an useful VR experience was no easy task. While the basic concepts take some getting used to, the game is generally enjoyable. Your controllers (there are no virtual hands here) are constantly active, regardless of what you’re carrying, and commands may get jumbled up in the garbage. With the precision that comes with playing the game for a long time, you won’t accidentally hit Preston Garvey in the face with your laser musket a second time. I also included pointing sticks in my virtual wands, which made it a lot easier to pick up and start conversations.

Various means of transportation

Controller layout

One of the most talked-about problems leading up to the release of Fallout 4 VR was locomotion. Will we be able to freely travel or will we be forced to depend on teleportation? Bethesda has chosen to leave the ultimate choice to the player.

The default mode of transportation is teleportation. Squeeze the trigger on your left Vive wand to bring up an arc and landing spot. You are free to teleport as far as you like as long as you do not teleport too far at once. Action Points (AP), the amount that also pertains to the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, are only lost if you teleport too far (V.A.T.S.). Teleporting is the quickest way to get across the world, however it detracts from immersion.

Smooth movement is the most enjoyable way to walk, and I had no discomfort even when the movement fade was turned off.

The game’s Settings menu now includes a “VR” section with locomotion, Pip-Boy, and movement fade settings (translucent borders that suck in to prevent nausea). Smooth movement may be chosen here, with the touchpad on the left Vive wand controlling it. To get started, just touch the direction you want to go. If you click, your character will move faster, but your AP meter will be drained. Smooth movement is the most enjoyable way to walk, and I had no discomfort even when the movement fade was turned off.

Because my setup was in a large area with nothing in the way, I could effortlessly rotate my body. The wand’s touchpad, on the other hand, has a snap-turn function. Those who can’t physically turn should have no problem playing Fallout 4 VR in one direction, and I don’t see why you couldn’t sit down and enjoy the game.

A melee weapon is a weapon that is used for close combat.

In Fallout 4 VR, the security baton, a short, thin smashing stick, is the first item you get your hands on. The first radroaches you encounter are close to the ground, so you’ll be bent over crushing them to death. It’d be tiring if all melee fights were like this, but thankfully, most opponents are standing tall and ready to take a thrashing at eye level.

No matter how large a sledgehammer you find, melee weapons, like guns, are controlled by a single controller. It’s a terrible joy to swing your controller and watch a head come off, and tracking is included with the Vive. It would be a lot of fun to go with a full melee build, but after a few hours of gaming, I found myself leaning toward guns since it was easier to keep track of opponents from distance. Taking on large groups of opponents up close in VR may be intimidating, especially if they’re all using melee weapons. You seem to be able to deflect incoming melee attacks, but this isn’t always the case.

Gunplay

After playing a few other Vive games like Pavlov VR and Breach It, it’s clear that carrying firearms with two hands works well in VR, but due to button-mapping limitations, guns in Fallout 4 VR are handled with one hand. The minigun is also included.

You’ll spend the bulk of your time here shooting stuff, and Bethesda did a great job with it. When firing, keep your controller at a natural angle, and reloading is as simple as pressing the grips together. Holding the larger weapons with one hand felt a bit cheesy at first, but I quickly got over it. Simply put, pretend to be John Rambo.

Right now, scopes aren’t working. Not in the least. If you only want to play Fallout 4 VR to become a badass stealth sniper assassin, wait till Bethesda releases a patch or two.

Settlements and crafting

The ability to turn all of your collected garbage into crafting materials and refashion it into armor, weapons, and settlement products was one of the most important changes between Fallout 4 and its first-person predecessors. All of the crafting and settlement-building skills have been preserved, and the menus have been modified to suit the Vive wands.

After navigating the Pip-Boy, I anticipated the crafting menus to be much more difficult. They are, however, evenly distributed throughout both wands. It took me about 30 seconds to get used to it, and then I was building and scraping as fast as I was in the regular game. The smooth movement you may be enjoying while building your colonies may be interrupted since the menu is shown on the touchpad. Teleportation is used instead.

Fallout 4’s VR immersion and enhancements

Diamond City

There’s really much more to say about Fallout 4 VR other that it’s a fantastic experience. The creaks and moans of decaying buildings around you, the snarls and groans of ghouls around the corner, and the chatter of enemies waiting in the shadows will send shivers up your spine as you stalk the wasteland. If you like Fallout 4, you’ll love this one even more. Changes to accommodate VR seem to have been kept to a bare minimum, with the most of them in place to make the switch from keyboard and mouse to Vive wands possible.

The first thing you’ll notice about virtual reality is how limited character customization options are. There isn’t a method to return to a third-person view as there is in Skyrim VR, thus there aren’t many options. Instead, there are just a few options to choose from.

If you like Fallout 4, you’ll love this one even more.

The computer terminals in the basic game were a cause of great annoyance for players who were stuck while attempting to sit down. Instead of shifting the VR view around upon entering a terminal, we are presented with a black background with flashing green text overlaid. It’s a simple and fast way to get rid of any nausea-inducing movement.

In VR, lockpicking works on the opposite premise, with a small lock image showing above the safe or door rather than taking up the bulk of the screen as in a traditional game. Instead of swiping left or right on the touchpad and twisting the screwdriver by pushing the trigger, you swipe left or right on the touchpad to move the bobby pin. It works, and now that I’ve played the game, I understand how mastering precise lockpicking movements with the wands would be impossible.

Pip-Boy

Your Pip-Boy is put on your virtual wrist by default and is visible at all times. Simply lift your arm in front of your face to make it larger and easier to read. This is a fantastic feature that adds to the realism, but I found it difficult to control, especially in combat. It was less immersive, but it worked better when I changed it to be accessed by pressing the touchpad’s center and using it as a regular menu. Using the Vive wand touchpad to navigate the Pip-Boy menus takes some getting used to, and it may be challenging at first, but Bethesda seems to have done a good job condensing a keyboard and mouse down to the wands.

Finally, V.A.T.S. is the VR upgrade that I’m most looking forward to. You’re engaged in a slow-motion situation that depletes your AP meter rather than stopping time. By pointing at certain body parts, you may easily highlight them, making accurate photos a snap. In real life, scoring four headshots in a row is satisfying, but in V.A.T.S., it’s almost overkill.

While you’re enjoying the wasteland, the bulk of the other small modifications to the control scheme and how the game operates go unnoticed. This is a good thing since it means you won’t have to worry about missing parts of the game because something didn’t transition correctly to VR.

Fallout 4 VR’s performance and aesthetics

Dialogue controls

My first experience with Fallout 4 VR took around two hours of continuous playtime. The gameplay pulled me in, and I had a lot of fun exploring and learning how to use the controls and battle. The aesthetics seemed to have suffered a setback, but nothing to write home about.

During my break, I began reading online comments about how the game’s fuzziness had made it unplayable. This seems to be linked to the DPI and scaling on your desktop. There are already a plethora of potential fixes circulating, and Bethesda is definitely looking at the issue. After experimenting with some of these modifications on my own setup, the game seems to be less hazy, but I’m eager to see anything official to see how the game is supposed to look.

Bethesda has released a beta update that fixes the blurriness that many players have been complaining about. The complete patch information and instructions for applying the update can be found on the Steam Fallout 4 VR News page. After the patch, the game’s graphics have much improved, but some players are still having issues.

Those darn wild mongrels

Aside from scaling and DPI problems, an NVIDIA GTX 1080, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i7-7700K CPU are sufficient for Fallout 4 VR. There were a few trips to the SteamVR gridscape for a quick load between important sections of the story, but generally, load times were quick and twitching and tearing were minimal.

In Bethesda games, bugs are frequent, and you’ll almost definitely come across a couple while playing. I crashed to desktop many times over the course of several hours, but nothing game-breaking happened. If you use the quicksave function, you’ll save a lot of time and frustration.

Mods seem to be working in the same way they did before the introduction of the mod manager in Fallout 4. I haven’t tried any of these yet, but it’ll be interesting to see what the community comes up with.

The Fallout 4 VR review comes to a close.

Crafting menu

The lack of AAA games on the scale of Fallout 4 VR is one of the most frequent worries we’ve heard — and one we’ve voiced ourselves. Yes, this is only one game, but it shows that with the right amount of love and attention, a VR game can be more than simply a few hours of fun.

Despite some early graphical issues, the game is captivating and makes you feel as if you’re a part of this post-apocalyptic world. Interactions with NPCs are up up and personal, and fights will have your heart pumping. Thanks to Bethesda’s different settings for the VR features we utilize the most, you should be able to play comfortably sitting, standing, or front-facing.

The controls, which have been lowered from a strong keyboard and mouse to two Vive wands, take some getting used to, but once you do, you’ll be sailing about with ease. For a VR game of this scale, it runs quite well, and I have a feeling that with a scaling patch and some community mod work, Fallout 4 VR will be something that a lot of people will like.

Pros:

  • The scale and immersion are breathtaking.
  • The new V.A.T.S. system is effective.
  • Virtual reality settings and various ways of mobility
  • The Fallout VR experience is authentically Fallout.

Cons:

  • It takes some time to get familiar with the controls.
  • There are some issues with the graphics.
  • Scopes are absolutely worthless in this situation.
  • Goodbye, social life.
