England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that he chose his players for the Euro 2020 final shootout against Spain by asking them to name their penalty takers.

In the hours after the final, Southgate stated that ensuring his players were supported was “top of my thoughts” during a press conference on Monday morning.

Saka, like so many other England players, had played a key part in guiding Southgate’s team to their first major men’s final in 55 years.
He started and excelled as England overcame a major historical stumbling block by defeating Germany in the last 16, and he was back in the starting XI for the semi-final victory against Denmark.
At 19 years and 305 days, he became the youngest Englishman to start a match in a major tournament’s semi-final stage or later, and it was his cross that set up Simon Kjaer’s own goal to give England the lead.
Southgate said after the game that no responsibility should be put on any of his players.
He replied, “You can’t have any recriminations.”

Former England captain Alan Shearer commended those who missed for stepping up in such a high-pressure situation, particularly given their age.
